Reading and watching the news today as we head towards World Refugee Day on June 20, it appears there is no issue more divisive in American politics than immigration. Especially in light of the recent end of Title 42 – the pandemic-era policy used to turn away migrants arriving at our southern border – immigration is dominating the public discourse, and has for most of the past decade. Indeed, I can say with confidence, after 8 years in the Obama administration and 20 years before that at the National Council of La Raza (now UNIDOS US), that the issue has never been anything but a hot-button. The work to create a more humane, just, and fair immigration system is incredibly difficult, and while I continue to believe that there are policy solutions at hand, far too many Americans see the issue as hopeless. But even amid all of the turmoil, in the last 18 months regular Americans have emerged at the forefront of an innovative approach that has broken through the typical partisan divide in the immigration debate.

The ocean is an ever-present backdrop of life in Miami. And beyond its scenic presence, there are numerous reasons we should care about the world’s oceans. From regulating our climate and the air we breathe, to providing us food, to forming the backbone of the tourism economies around the world, our oceans are critical for the survival of our planet. However, they are facing many serious threats, including overfishing, pollution and rapid warming. This World Ocean Day, we should all get inspired to protect the waters that keep planet Earth alive.

Let’s talk about youth mental health. You may be feeling uncomfortable at the mention of this topic due to the stigma surrounding it, but let’s look at some statistics that show why we must talk about this topic now.

Growing up, I loved the idea of having a large family. Because of relationships that existed between my siblings, cousins, aunts, uncles, etc., I knew I wanted a large family. Once SMA attacks the lower motor neurons, the ability to control muscle movement is lost.

Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) is a genetic disorder that impacts thousands of families across the world. Also known as brittle bone disease, OI is characterized by bones that do not form normally or easily fracture, even with impact as minor as a sneeze.

Cerebral palsy is a group of motor disorders that impact a person’s body movement, muscle tone, and coordination. Thousands of children are affected by cerebral palsy in the United States alone. According to the CDC, cerebral palsy is found in approximately 1 in 345 children, and is one of the most common childhood disorders in the United States.

Cerebral palsy is the most common motor disorder among children in the United States. While a cerebral palsy diagnosis comes with many life adjustments, proper treatment can improve a child’s quality of life.

Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC), or arthrogryposis for short, is a diagnosis characterized by multiple joint contractures or stiffness of the joints. A contracture occurs when a joint stiffens, resulting in a fixed bent or straight position and restricting its overall movement.

Although she couldn’t verbally identify the names of all the colors, my daughter Valentina before the age of three could pick her clothes, bows and shoes to match to perfection. Rarely did I ever have to make her change her outfit, nor did she clash fashionably like so many children her age do when allowed to pick their own clothes.

We are reminded this month, and every Black History Month, that, while we strive to be one nation indivisible, we do not achieve this end by erasing the contributions, experiences, and perspective of Black and Brown people. Two centuries of such erasure and the privileging of false white assimilation and incomplete mestizaje narratives have consequences for the racially inclusive future we say we seek.

When I decided to get a dog, I didn’t realize the amount of love, companionship, and peace I would receive from bringing this dog into my life. I decided to get my dog, Teddy, a Maltese, while going through some really big life changes. They say there are five most stressful life events one goes through: death of a loved one, divorce, moving, major illness or injury and job loss. I was going through a divorce and was furloughed from work because of Covid-19, so I thought getting a puppy would bring me happiness, and it sure did. I also learned that having a puppy provided me new purpose, which helped with my mental health and anxiety. Here are a few ways my dog Teddy helps with my mental health.
